Media Example #17

To be honest, I don't know who this guy is or why I should trust his predictions. However,  when I consider what he is saying based on what i've seen, I would have to say that they seem to carry some validality. Based on the current economic meltdown, its pretty much commonplace to take out the middleman any place you can.  It's just all we can afford to do right now in a down economy.  This is why it doesn't come as a surprise when musicians and artists every where have decided to cut out the middleman. If you think about it-- nobody buys CDs based on a record label anyway, we are paying for music not record labels.  It is the artist themselves that we care about.   So the best move for artists to make right now is adding in social networking.  It is just the obvious thing to do.  It bring in more fans, more money, for absolutely nothing.  Bottom line is that it doesn't take a psychic prediction to figure that out.  Just open up your eyes to the world around you.  Look at all of the female singers or movie stars creating a fashion line or perfume.  Artists and musicians are just looking into more outlets to get more people interested in keeping their industry alive.

Media Example #15

Here is Liz's example.

NY Times Vocal Patters

And this is what she had to say about it:
"I found this to be a very interesting article about vocal trendsetting. New York Times reporter, Douglas Quenqua, has a unique view on the idea of uptalk also know as valley girl speech. (If you are still unclear about what this is just listen to the pod cast.) The view on the article is that young women are vocal trendsetters and that men eventually join in once they realize that a particular trend is not going away.

In my opinion, the most obvious valley girl word is "like" and this article gave me a new look at that word completely. It stated that "In 2011, Dr. Liberman conducted an analysis of nearly 12,000 phone conversations recorded in 2003, and found that while young people tended to use “like” more often than older people, men used it more frequently than women." I was also surprised to hear that the word "like" has made its way to the Webster's Dictionary.

Overall, this was a well written article because the writer tells us what he knows, what he does not know, and what we think we know. I found it to be very interesting and think other people will too."

Media Example #16

First and foremost, I do still have a few questions about the story itself.  Like, why wouldn't the mom want her child in a school picture? And was this a problem because of the color of the smiley face or that the school still put the kid in the picture?

On another note, I totally agree with Daniel, this is definitely not television news worthy. However, I could see this featured on the Jimmy Kimball show. Clearly, this news channel was  struggling to find newsworthy drama.  Just looking at the anchor, it's obvious to me that they know how ridiculous the story is.  It reminds me of the part on anchorman when Ron Burgundy is doing a story on the water skiing squirrel.

Media Example #14

At first I was a little taken off by the article about the guy and the heavens but after I re-read what Charlie said about it, it made sense and i started looking at some other examples. Eventually, I found one about a black lab that laid in the middle of the road protecting its dog friend whom was laying in the middle of the road.  I posted a direct link to the story below.  It's the one that's got me hooked.

Check this out, on Barstool Sports!

Media Example #13

This is a very fitting example for this assignment. I find that blogging can be harder than it should be.  A simple task with very complicated requirements.  The writer is correct in that we need to keep the audience interested and, short to the point.  I agree that it is a lot harder to write and make a point in 500 words rather than 5,000. On the surface it would seem that the opposite were true, however a lot can get deleted once you've started proofreading. Even for this assignment, I will email my response to myself before posting it.  According to this article, there's a waiting period a blogger should have before posting.  Brainstorming is usually where I spend most of my time when preparing a blog entry.  It's not really mentioned in this story but I find it to easiest and it seems to cut my writing time in half.

Media Example #10- Week of 2/20

This is a nice change of pace for this blog assignment. It's always nice to learn something new about social networking because as we know it's constantly growing. I went to the website myself and attempted to make a new mem.  I have never seen or heard of this before reading this blog.  I guess it's true.  Ya learn something new everyday.

Quicken Loans Press Release

Press Release

About nine years ago I was working for a real estate company as a recruiter when I tried recruiting the owner of Quicken Loans, Dan Gilbert.    I approached him like anyone else I recruited without any knowledge of his reputation in the real estate industry.  Needless to say, he didn't take the job, instead he offered me one.  At that time, I was very content where I was at but kept his number just in case.  About two years later, I got in touch with again and before I knew it, I was part of the Quicken Loans team.  With that being said, six years later, here I am still going strong; working remotely from South Carolina.  I intend to continue my career within the Quicken Loans family after I graduate and this press release should explain why.
  • This is very important to know, "The survey is randomly distributed to team members, with the results of the survey accounting for two-thirds of the overall company score."
  • I like how all of the press realeases including this one, have quotes from the top folks at the company (Dan Gilber, Bill Emmerson, Jay Farner, Pat McInnis, Shawn Krause...etc.).  For this particular peioce the quotes are from the founders themselves which is important to show that the leaders are still activley involved.
  • I also like how the lead covers other areas where QL risen above the odds. "Quicken Loans Inc., the nation’s largest online home lender and a top-five retail lender, today was ranked among the Top 10 on FORTUNE Magazine’s annual “100 Best Companies to Work For” list. According to the FORTUNE report published online today, and on newsstands Monday, January 23, Quicken Loans ranked #10, making it the highest ranking Michigan company on the distinguished list. Quicken Loans has placed among the Top 30 companies on FORTUNE’s list for the past nine years."

Media Example #9- Week of 2/20

The introduction itself was a bit long but had good intentions.  I like how the article leads in with "Building off Home Box Office’s freedoms as a subscription cable channel to provide high-quality programming to justify premium value, it added to a run of series that included Sex and the City (1998-2004) and The Sopranos (1999-2007)." I feel like that says a lot about the kind of person that would enjoy this show.   I did, however, fell like there were too many year reference in the article.  It might just be me but when I am sitting there reading off different years over and over it tends to loose meaning.  We went from 1998 to to 1972 then 1990 then 1983, you get what I am saying.  Once he actually starts getting into the Six Feet Under show details he slows it down a bit but still a lot of different decades mentioned.

Young Women Often Trendsetters in Vocal Patterns - NYTimes.com

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/02/28/science/young-women-often-trendsetters-in-vocal-patterns.html?pagewanted=all

I really like this trend article because of the topic originality.   The writer, Douglas Quenqua,  has a unique take on this topic because he's writing about the misconception of a valley girl based on the way women talk.

As a female, I admit to using the "girls aren't that bright" theory to my advantage.  For example, if I am on a date with a guy, I will stand outside the car door and act confused until he opens it for me.  Then if he asks what I am doing I just say, "I wasn't sure what to do, I mean, most guys open doors for me."   My two favorite phrases to use when I don't want to do something are: "I'm confused" and "I'm scared."  Either way, the end result is usually the same, I appear to be the damsel in distress and the guy feels like a hero.  Now, some guys may think that's scandalous, some may think its too needy, heck some might even think its cute, but I like to think of it as our (women) dirty little secret.

Kickin' Chicken

The city of Charleston is crawling with new comers and old timers but no matter who you the Kickin Chicken has something for everyone.  Behind the telling neon lights that fill their windows sit a lively group of bar goers and tight knit families coming together.   Kickin Chicken is a casual dinning experience that will leave your tummy filled and family satisfied.

Southeastern Wildlife Exposition 2012

The event that I plan on doing for my news article is the Southeastern wildlife exposition 2012.  This event will take place this weekend beginning Friday, February 17 through Sunday, February 19th. My brother's girlfriend actually recommended this event.  She personally knows of one of the artists in the show and I plan on interviewing her.

To get more information on this event go to http://www.CharlestonLowcountry.com/specialpages/SEWE.html

Media Example #8- Week of 2/13

People just have to understand that you have to take a risk as a designer and make a judgment call on how or if people would want to wear them. Which is why I agree that most of what every fashion designer loves isn't necessarily exactly what will sell but the idea behind the design and sometimes just the color contrast is what sells. One of the other fashion blogs from our class stated that most of today's hottest fashion style was designed by the people, for the people. It referred to stretchy pants, baggy shirts, and boots and how they can be worn in many different ways,  by many different people.  I believe that is precisely why it is so important to have fashion designers that  are actually shopping in the stores that they're designing for.

Media Example #7- Week of 2/13

This was an interesting choice.  Honestly,  I feel like there was too much going on,  it was hard to figure out what is part of the article and what is other jumble. As I read this article, I couldn't help but think, “less talk, more do." I feel as though my entire condo could have been cleaned in the time it took me to read this article.  But that is precisely my problem- no matter what I am supposed to be doing, I find myself cleaning.  I can't leave the job have finished and have a hard time falling asleep when my room is a mess.

An even bigger problem for me, is that I'm just as good at making messes as I am cleaning them. Even if my day consists of doing absolutely nothing, I still have random stuff laying around.  I would not leave a sticky substance on  my countertops, or dirty dishes in the sink(for longer than a few hours).  I would, however, leave my pop cans in the living room or leave my backpack in my kitchen or something like that.

One thing about this article I did like was how they pointed out that keeping things clean would make cleaning a lot easier. But if you are a dirty person, watch the TV show called infested on Biography and I promise you, it will change your life.

Media Example #6- Week of 2/6

I like the animation on this website. However, I'm not much of a tweeter(is that a word?).   I find it awkward to know everything that everyone is doing.  On the other hand,  I can see how tweeting can help people feel connected to the world around them. However, I feel a little uncomfortable being so connected to people that I normally wouldn't even speak to.  Let's be honest here, if  I just ate a bowl of cereal, would you really care to know? If you say yes, you're such a liar.  All in all, for those of  you that enjoy tweeting and being tweeted(?), this site is perfect for you.

Media Example #5- Week of 2/6

Well I can see how the lust in the relationship could die down after a while. Just like Michael said, you have got to spice up your relationship. However,   I don't like how Michael was insinuating that having a relationship should be a job.   Personally,  I do enough working already,  the last thing I want is to come home from work and find that I have another  job to do at home. When it comes to getting to know  each other in a relationship,  I agree that knowing your boyfriend or girlfriend  is vital to survive any marriage or even friendship.

I refuse to yell and nag my boy about the same thing, so if they find that he does something I don't like or can't stand, the 1st time he does it I let him know that it is not okay with me.  The 2nd time he does it, I let him know that I've already let him know. If he does it again then I him let go.  You have to be one giant piece of perfect for me to put up with any BS.    The perfect relationship (in my mind) is one that has more fun and little to no drama.

Now, now- don't get me wrong, I'm still a female. I still love getting that special green box with that familiar red ribbon, I still like to hear as many complements as he can think of, and when he takes me out on dates(which is a requirement) he still opens every door.  Some say women are high maintenance but I can't speak for everyone, all I know is I sure as hell am.

Media Example #4- Week of 1/30

I really enjoyed this blog. I know exactly where the writer is coming from.  The article in itself was hilarious  and the pictures were an added bonus.   Some say that simplicity is genius and I believe that to be true.   This writer only backed up that theory with his use of pictures and typical but detailed examples. Great job; good pick.

FBI releases dossier on Steve Jobs

http://www.usatoday.com/tech/news/story/2012-02-09/steve-jobs-fbi-file/53029956/1

While being the Apple fanatic that I am, the words "Steve Jobs" and "FBI"  was definitely what drew me into reading this article. The article begins with, "The FBI on Thursday made public a dossier on late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, disclosing details on his reported drug use and ability to "distort reality."   I like this lead because it was surprised me to hear that Steve Jobs (or any computer genius at that)  could have  a drug problem.   However, the Hook might've  intrigued me into reading this article  but the actual facts did  it no justice.  To save you from reading this entire article, it basically came down to this:  somebody that knew Steve in college said that Steve Jobs used to pot in college.

Two women have been charged with break-ins Jan. 30 at two consignment stores in Mount Pleasant, police said Monday.
One of the suspects is an employee of both stores, Mount Pleasant Police Capt. Stan Gragg said.
He said police on Thursday arrested Martha D. Leary, 18, of Prince Allen Court, and Jessica A. Dupree, 20, of West Madison Avenue. Both are charged with two counts of second-degree burglary in connection with the break-ins at Butterfly Consignment Shop at 624 Longpoint Road and Victoria’s Consignment Shop at 920 Houston Northcutt Boulevard.
Leary is a former employee of both businesses, Gragg said.
He said additional arrests are expected.

Media Example #3- Week of 1/30

The 1st question that popped into my head when I was watching this video was, "how old is this guy?” He sounds like he is in his early 80s.   Although,  Bill Cunningham might be approaching his last years,  I think his insight was ready accurate.  It was nice to watch a video instead of reading a long article,  especially when it comes to fashion.  My best friends both have degrees in fashion design and they always have something to say about my unique style (putting it lightly).  I officially bought my first pair of skinny jeans  last Sunday.   I figured that its about time to get over my fear of ankle huggers and get on with the fashion world.  And it's a good thing I did because according to this,  they're not going out of style anytime soon.

Media Example #1- Week of 1/23

To be  completely honest,  the magazine Glamour is not my cup of tea.   This article specifically is one of the reasons why I don’t read this kind of magazine.  I find it quite strange that any guy would openly admit to being wrong about something; anything.  I don’t think I’ve ever met a guy that says the words, “I found the one”.  As cute as it would be, I just find a hard to believe that a guy that once considered himself a single swinger,  would be openly admitting to falling in love with one woman in a such dramatic fashion.   This is just too much of a typical love song. But, I blame myself for feeling this way,  I mean,  my favorite artist wrote the famous lyrics, “so much for my happy ending”.   I suppose if I was an avid listener of Taylor Swift,  then I would love this love song.

Media Example #2- Week of 1/23

The days of Peyton Manning vs. Tom Brady in the AFC Championship are over.  Time to continue rebuilding a franchise that has been lights out for the last decade.  The good thing for the Indianapolis Colts are they get the first pick in the draft (Andrew Luck) and hopefully they replace a future hall of fame Quarterback.   It reminds me of when San Francisco replaced Joe Montana with Steve Young and we all saw what that lead too; yet another Super Bowl Championship team.  In two weeks for the Patriots to come into Indianapolis; is just another drop of rain in an already stormy year for the Colts.  Maybe this week Peyton can go watch his brother get ready for the Patriots and learn how to beat them, something Peyton has not done very well.

DNA Testing Dog Poop

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/06/24/dna-testing-dog-poop_n_884060.html

Being a mother of two dogs, I found this blog quite interesting. Both, Marley and Lilly, are very secretive about where they placed their feces.  No joke, my dogs will hide in bushes or behind  trees in an area where no one can see them. I find this quite convenient because my dogs choose places that people don’t walk and I can’t get to. Every time I’ve asked one of my neighbors what they would do  in my situation, they say “it’s fertilizer, leave it.”  However on the other hand, I have a neighbor whose dog likes to pee  on the bushes right outside my patio and every time I walk out I can smell it, and holy cow does it smell bad. The worst is when my dogs are outside, and then the neighbor brings their dog out and  this dog will walk up to mine and literally pee on them. As far as DNA testing  dog poop is concerned,  the idea that in itself seems  ridiculous but there are some dog owners that really don’t care where their dogs go to the bathroom and do nothing about it.    Obviously, my neighbors dog  isn’t just peeing  in all the wrong places,  there have been times when I’ve walked outside  and witnessed her dog pooping on the sidewalk.  That’s right,  the  most obvious place where a dog should not go. Personally, if I can get the place my dogs chose to go,  I will pick it up and I feel like  DNA testing dog poop just goes to show how inconsiderate people can be. But if people don’t listen to the rules and don’t respect their neighbors than DNA testing might be the only resolution.
